What is a Surcharge?

With the online payments, managing transaction fees is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy bottom line for businesses. If you're using Payabli as your payment processor, you may want to apply a surcharge to your credit card transactions to cover processing costs.

How to enable Surcharging option?

Enabling Surcharge at the Enrollment phase:

Surcharging can be enabled right at the point of Payabli enrollment process if you are in a state that allows surcharging, you will see a modal window asking if you would like to use surcharging. If the user selects yes at the conclusion of enrollment, they will have surcharging enabled in settings.

Enabling Surcharge Post Enrollment phase:

If the user chooses no for Surcharge at the enrollment phase, the setting will be disabled by default which user can change from the Setting screen post enrollment and at any time.  You can click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner, Select Integration then Setting under AG Payments to manage preferences and settings.

You can Toggle ON the Enable Surcharging option under Settings.

How the Surcharge is Applied

Once the surcharging option is enabled, Payabli will automatically calculate and add the surcharge to all eligible transactions. The system will apply the surcharge to credit card payments processed through all the following channels:

  • Credit Card Payments by Phone,
  • Credit Card Payments by Email,
  • Credit Card Payments via E-Invoice
  • Credit Card Payments via E-Statement
  • Credit Card Prepayments via the E-Proposal
  • Accepting Credit Card Payments in the Arborgold Customer Portal,
  • Auto-Bill feature.

Common Examples of Surcharge Calculations:

  • Fixed Percentage Surcharge: A 3% surcharge would be added to any transaction processed via credit card.
    • Example: A $550 payment would incur a $3 surcharge, for a total of $16.50.

Legal Considerations

The 3 states that currently do not support surcharging are Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts. If one of those 3 states is selected, you would not see the modal for enabling or disabling surcharging when starting enrollment and not see the surcharging toggle from settings.

This will add a fee of 3% for credit card transactions. There will be no fee added for debit card or ACH transactions.

By clearly communicating surcharges to your customers and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, you can create a seamless payment experience while covering additional processing costs.
